How to Write Fantasy Fiction: World Building
Creating dynamic fictional worlds is crucial for great fantasy stories. Here are some things to consider when imagining and developing your fantasy world.
Answer these questions to start building your fantasy world:
Who inhabits this world? Humans? Some other sort of creature? Are there different ethnicities or religions? Different languages?
Is it a city or country landscape? Desert or woodsy or coastal or something completely new?
What do the animals and plants look like?
What is family life like in your world? How are children treated?
What do the inhabitants of this place value highly? A resource? A relic?
Do they have technology? If so, what kind?
Do they have weapons?
Is there any magic in your world?
How does the magic work? Spells, magical objects, something else?
How do your characters gain the ability to use magic? Is it inborn? Do they learn it in a school or from a mentor?
Are there situations when the magic won’t work or will backfire spectacularly?
Is there a price to pay for doing magic? Does doing magic affect your mind or body?
